WHAT WE DO

I'd like to share with you my perspective on pricing "collectibles". I see three levels of value and cost.

The First Tier contains items that are by no means "one-of-a-kind". For example, the Elton John signed photocopy is a great piece. For an Elton fan with relatively little to spend, it's wonderful. There are certainly more Elton signatures to be had. Things of this ilk fit in that first tier for me.

The Second Tier has items that are not impossible to find either. They are out there just getting more and more difficult to get one's hands on. They are, as well, distinctly more valuable by virtue of the artists fame and achievement, and have an unusual presentation as well. A front-signed McCartney LP might be a good example: Paul was a Beatle (that counts, right?), Paul is in demand, a front-signed LP is always preferred (and brings a higher price) over a back-signed LP. So, while McCartney signed LPs are not impossible to find, they would fall into that second tier.

The Third Tier is tough to price. When I have something like a Tony Curtis signed "Pepper-Head" (with a photo of him signing it for 100% provenance!), which, I believe to be the only "Pepper-Head" signed by the celebrity it represents in existence, how does one price something in this one-of-a-kind category? When it's sold, it's gone. Period. Another example is the John Lennon signed guitar strap that accompanied John's 1956 Les Paul guitar. Along with the singular inscription, no other signed Lennon guitar strap has ever surfaced. Most can appreciate this item's unique place In Rock and Roll history. Once again it's difficult to slap a number on a one-of-a-kind item with such relevance in Pop Culture. In Auction houses, these "one-offs" bring outstanding prices. John Lennon's hand-written lyrics to "All You Need Is Love" went for 1 million pounds in the UK. "Give Peace A Chance" sold in US auction for $841,000. Please keep this in mind when browsing hand-written lyrics!

I'm fortunate that my collection has such wonderful items. I am an extremely careful collector. In addition to a lifetime of learning low to tell the real from the "knock-offs", I also use sound judgment, common sense, and rely on the provenance that come with the pieces I purchase. I look for provenance that comes from a "first-hand" source (someone who witnessed a signing - or legal documents that lock-in authenticity). So, I have taken all these things into account prior to pricing a third tier, truly one-of-a-kind, item. I feel these prices are truly fair in consideration of all the values I spoke of above.
